Asphalt cutting requires the use of a different type of blade than those that are effective for cutting concrete, granite, marble, and other hard stones. Asphalt is considered a soft surface, because it is highly abrasive. In order to cut through an abrasive material like asphalt, you need to use a diamond blade with a hard bond. If you use a soft-bonded blade, you will find that you lose cutting speed or that the blade ceases to work entirely. At the very least, you will be greatly reducing the life span of the blade.
When you use diamond blades for cutting asphalt, grit on the exposed edge of the blade is worn away as it cuts through the material. This wear and fracturing exposes a new layer of grit, and the cutting continues unabated. A hard blade releases grit easily, so it wears properly while cutting abrasive surfaces.
Generally, dry blades have a softer bond than wet blades, but some are designed for asphalt cutting. Wet blades are brazed and also laser welded. They require water to cool or lubricate a cut. If you attempt to use a wet blade without water, you will be able to do it, but the high temperatures generated will cause the blade to lose tension and you will no longer be able to cut with it.
